Kumarapuram - 100 Agraharams Project
Agraharam 87 in the 100 Agraharams Project
A few meters away from my Palakkad home, Kumarapuram is the epitome of a modest and well knit agraharam which has not lost its old world charm. Sri Rama Govinda Bhattacharya continues a revered tradition of performing rituals during temple utsavams across Palghat. His son, Sri Ganesh, carries forward this sacred duty, and now the legacy continues through the next generation.
The worship of Skanda or Subramanya or Kumaran would have given the name to the agraharam. I have read that the association of Snakes with Subramanya swamy is because - the lord is the very Kundalini shakthi which exists within us and the passage of such energy through various chakras are depicted as his heads.
The temple rituals follow Vaikhanasa Agama Shastra which is also followed in the Tirumala Tirupati temple. Vasnthothsavam, the 10 day chariot festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Medam.
The Kumarapuram school which came up in 1974 changed the fortunes of the area. Many in the area have done their schooling here. Earlier the Government Institute of Teacher Education for Woman Palakkad was established in 1923 at Kumarapuram.
The website of the gramam says "About 25 years ago, the village was surrounded by paddy fields which were later converted to housing plots (Venkateswara colony, Prasanth Nagar etc.). The village is divided into Pazhan Theruvu, Ratta Theruvu and Otta Theruvu. As the name indicate the Pazhan theruvu may be the oldest part of the village."
Radhe Krishna!
