History
The residents of this Agraharam are mainly Tamil Brahmins, commonly called as Kerala Iyers who migrated from Thanjavur and Kumbakonam base (of Tamilnadu) more than 300 years ago.
Tamil Brahmin who migrated from Thanjaore and other areas established a number of Agraharams in Palakkad district. One such Agraharam is Kuzhalmannam Agraharam. This Agraharam and the temples are supposed to be 300 or more years old. Formerly many of them own landed properties. There were many Vedic scholars, musicians and educationalists in this Agraharam. The economic depression after Kerala Land Legislation saw vast emigration of Brahmins from here to elsewhere in India in search of jobs to sustain themselves. Due to Land Reforms Act the Temple lands were also lost.
Kuzhalmannam Agraharam is just 2 kilometers from Kuzhalmannam NH junction. The Agraharam can be conveniently reached from NH junction by auto or taxi. The nearest bus stop is Periyapalam on the Kuzhalmannam-Kottayi road. There are 75 houses in this Agraharam consisting of three rows-'Double street' and 'Single street'.
Earlier this Agraharam was known to be called as “KUNNEKADU”
Shri Maha Ganapathy Temple
Shri Maha Ganapathy (popularly known as “Pillaiyar Kovil”) occupies a significant place, and he is involved before any undertaking. He is believed to be the remover of all misfortunes. This temple is famous for fulfilling the desires of his devotees. The main offering to the deity is Modhakam Vazhipadu, Neiappam Vazhipadu and breaking of coconut. This centuries old temple is located at the northwestern end of the Agraharam, facing east. In front of the temple, there is a huge pond called “Pilliyar Kulam”.
Shri Lakshminarayana Swami Temple
Shri Lakshminarayana Swami, the presiding deity of this Agraharam, has been showering on his devotees with bountiful blessings and all-round prosperity. He is also reputed for the blessings for Santhanabhagyam. The main Prathishta is Lord Narayana along with Lakshmi, the goddess of plenty and prosperity. Here Lakshmi is sitting on Lord Narayana's left thigh. The festival deity (Utsava Moorthy) is “Seetha Lakshmana Hanumath Sametha Sri Ramachandra Swami”, a graceful figure in Panchaloka. The main offering to the deity is performing Navarathri Vilakku, Abhishekam, Kalabham Charthu and Pal Payasam Nivedyam. This east facing temple is situated in the heart of the Agraharam. This ancient temple is considered as the jewel for its beautiful workmanship. The entrance to the temple is through a Mukha Mantapam. The carving of Gaja Lakshmi, the pillars and various scroll work on the ceiling give an elegant look. The floors of the Namaskara Mantapam are built in white marble. The front side of the Sreekovil, Sopanam and Sreekovil doors is covered with beautifully designed brass sheets. Sreekovil doors are covered with Ashtalakshmi figures.
