History
Thiruvilwamala is a highly scenic and ancient heritage agraharam perched on a hill, about 35 kilometers west of Palakkad. Renowned for its rare Patala Anjana stone idols and twin sanctums deeply connected to Lord Parasurama and Amalaka Maharishi, the village boasts a profound spiritual legacy. Driven by the dedication of elders since the 1930s, the Brahmin Samooham has systematically developed vital community infrastructure, ensuring the preservation of this flourishing settlement while accommodating pilgrims drawn to its timeless sanctity.

(This is a place of Othamadoms)
Kerala acquires a different character during the monsoon. The earth turns lush, the hills breathe mist, and temple towns seem to return to an older rhythm. Thiruvilwamala is one such timeless kshetram during monsoon — a place where one must receive darshan in the twin sanctums of Vilwadrinathan and the swayambhu form of Rama revealed to Amalaka Maharishi.
The Sree Vilwadrinatha Temple of Thiruvilwamala has two sanctums. In the sthala-purana, one shrine is linked to the Vishnu idol consecrated by Parasurama, while the other is linked to the self-manifest form revealed to Amalaka Maharishi, with Sridevi, Bhoodevi, and Anantha.
I have read that the stone of Anantha here is Patala Anjana — an exceptionally sacred and rare black stone. I have also read that the idol of Guruvayoorappan is associated with the same sacred stone.Among the many Rama temples of Kerala, I am also reminded of Kadavallur Rama Temple, another unique and beautiful kshetram, known for its 29 wooden bracket figures on the outer wall. It is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is certainly worth a visit.
Please do not miss even a minute of Sri T. R. Mahadevan’s wonderful exposition on Thiruvilwamala. He covers the full arc — from the sthala-purana to the temple’s more recent developments — with depth, devotion, and clarity.Thiruvilwamala is not merely a place to visit. It is a place to receive, remember, and return from with silence in the heart.
