History
Ramanathapuram is a culturally rich, 600-year-old agraharam situated in Palakkad town, distinctly marked by a Shiva temple at one end, a Vishnu temple at the other, and a protective Uchishta Maha Ganapathy shrine at its entrance. Historically steeped in Vedic traditions and inhabited by a Brahmin community of about 80 original homes, the village is renowned for its spiritual discipline and philanthropy. It proudly hosts the Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Veda Patasala and an attached Goshala. Blessed by visits from the Kanchi Paramacharya, Ramanathapuram remains a thriving center of heritage, continuous Vedic learning, and communal harmony.

Author's Notes
*Ramanathapuram Agraharam*
*Agraharam 104 in the 100 Agraharams Project*
This is episode 104 of the 100 Agraharams Project — Ramanathapuram. We started this project in 2022, and as of June 2026 we've covered 103 agraharams. There are roughly 130 in total, and with Advocate Gana Krishnan and Sri Satheesh on the team, we're hoping to finish by 2027.
One of my favorite parts of Ramanathapuram is the Veda Patasala. I used to spend a lot of time there with the vidyarthis and the then Adhyapaka, Brahmasri Dravid Ganapadigal. It was founded in 1996 by Dr. C.R. Swaminathan, starting in Chathapuram before moving here. If you're visiting Palakkad, go see this Patasala — contribute what you can, share a meal with the students, and spend time at the goshala, which is growing. Efforts like this, to sustain Sanatana Dharma, only survive with continuous support.
At the center of the agraharam is a well with a tree that has a wonderfully calming presence. I'd love to see the agraharam add granite seating around it — something that brings back the old community sitout culture, especially on cool evenings.
The Shiva temple here is beautiful, and so is the Sree Krishna temple.
For a while now, I've been bringing groups to visit these agraharams. One challenge: finding a traditionally maintained agraharam home to actually show visitors. Too often we have to travel away from Kalpathy to find one that's preserved. I wish that in every agraharam, at least a couple of homes were kept as model homes for visitors — that's what will let the 100 Agraharams Project bring groups back again and again for a real heritage-village experience.
Ramanathapuram has produced generations of Vedic scholars, ritual experts, musicians, cooks and entrepreneurs — names remembered with affection include Adinarayana Iyer, Jadavallabha Chellappa Ganapathigal, Narayana Bhagavatar, Anantha Raman, and Devaraja Iyer.
And the entrepreneurial thread continues today. I'm especially excited about Subhiksham, a new food place with roots in Ramanathapuram. It reminds me of a much bigger story: two sons of this agraharam, Shri R.S. Narayanasamy Iyer and Shri R.S. Ganapathy Iyer, left for Chennai and in 1933 started Hotel Sri Rama Bhavan on Thambu Chetty Street. It became a regular haunt for the likes of C.N. Annadurai, Kannadasan, Karunanidhi and Cho Ramaswamy. That same Ramanathapuram family also gave us the 777 brand, and for anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s — the Dhideer Mix.
So when you're in Palakkad, don't skip Ramanathapuram. It may not look like the postcard image of a traditional agraharam, but it's alive, it's supported by its people, and it has a story worth hearing.
Ram Ram.
