Lakshminarayanapuram - 100 Agraharams Project
Agraharam 88 in the 100 Agraharams Project
The first thing that strikes any visitor to the agraharams of Palakkad is the charm of row houses lining narrow and often modest streets. LN Puram, however, stands apart—one of the few agraharams with an unusually wide road. Perhaps it hints at the historical prosperity of this settlement and its residents.
My retirement home is near Kumarapuram, yet I noticed a recurring mention in parent documents: properties here—some even across the road or near the river—once belonged to the “Swami of LN Puram.” Such was the extent of his landholding and influence.
I must not take away the richness of the oral narratives offered by the village folks and Dr Arun Jaganathan Though I typically limit each agraharam documentation to 30 minutes, this one demanded more—justifiably so. The video captures its interconnected history, lineages, rituals, festivals, and stunning visuals, offering an immersive and meaningful experience.
There’s also a deeper historical strand woven into LN Puram’s past—a tale of idol exchanges between its temple and that of Shekharipuram. During the Mysore Sultanate’s intrusion into Palakkad, invited by the local chieftains—the Achans—Hyder Ali sought access to Malabar’s ports and wealth. His son, Tipu Sultan, a notorious iconoclast, left a trail of destruction. In my research for the 100 Agraharams project, I found that several villages bear scars—damaged idols, desecrated sanctums—traces of Tipu’s brutal campaign.
For a fuller account, refer to The Malabar Manual by William Logan. One chilling observation he quotes comes from Colonel William Fullarton: “Tippoo’s soldiers, therefore, daily exposed the heads of many Brahmans in sight of the fort.” Brahmins were rounded up at the Palakkad Fort and beheaded. It is deeply perplexing that such trauma finds no place in the collective memory or documentation of these agraharams.
Radhe Krishna!
