Author's Notes
Puthiya Kalpathy — Kalpathy New
Agraharam 101 in the 100 Agraharams Project
Radhe Krishna.
Agraharams 99, 100 and 101 are not entries in a project for me. They are blood. My paternal great-grandfather, my paternal grandfather and my maternal grandfather — all three lived substantial parts of their lives in these streets. The project arrived at their doorstep. I merely followed.
I was born in New Kalpathy in 1964.
I can close my eyes and I am there. The vengala panai sits on the wood fire. My paatti stirs. The smoke curls up into the wooden rafters and settles there, along with the smell of aviyal, molakootal, thoran — smells that seeped into the wood and never left. Every summer I returned to that kitchen. Every summer it fed me something beyond food.
The house is gone now. That is a wound I carry quietly.
But the agraharam stands. And it stands because of men who came before us — great Vedic scholars and elders like my maternal grandfather Sri Ranganathan whose entire purpose was the welfare of the community. They held the line. We walk the street they preserved.
Puthiya Kalpathy is rare among agraharams. It is alive. There is always movement — visitors, pre-wedding shoots, festivals, the hum of conversation. Temples anchor both ends of the long street. The river flows beside it. Eating places line the way. It breathes.
I hope the local authorities will soon establish a facilitation centre here — a place where visitors can carry back not just memories, but knowledge. This agraharam has earned that.
Ram Ram.
