Sekharipuram - 100 Agraharams Project
Agraharam 89 in the 100 Agraharams Project
Sekharipuram finds mention in William Logan’s Malabar Manual—a timeless agraharam etched into the geography and memory of Palakkad. It is one of the more visually arresting settlements, with its streets gently sloping into a central pond—a marvel of ancestral wisdom. The gradient, hydrology, and civic planning, all seamlessly tuned to nature. The pond, fed by these natural flows, remains perennial. Soumya and I often walk its banks, seated on stone benches, as the distant Sahyadris turn golden at dusk. Here, I photograph migratory birds and play with lambs that wander in freely, as if from another age. The sometimes abundant orchids on the vast trees of the shores of the pond are a sight for sore eyes.
There are whispers that Sekharipuram may have been named after Rajashekara Varma of Palghat. Others believe its founders came from a namesake village in Tanjore, much like the origins of Chokkanathapuram (from Madurai) and Vaidyanathapuram (from Vaideeswaran Koil). How I wish these agraharams had preserved their oral histories—they would be treasures of memory and migration.
The Kasi Viswanatha Swamy Temple here owes its existence to the generosity of Smt. Lakshmi Ammal of Sekharipuram, who gifted a sacred Bana Lingam and 1320 gold coins to Ittikombi Achan. The inscription at Kalpathy’s Shiva temple—dated 1424–25—attests to this gift, placing Sekharipuram’s antiquity well before the 15th century, in the shadow of migrations triggered by Malik Kafur’s invasion of the Pandya lands in 1310.
I have already spoken of the idol interchanges between Lakshminarayanapuram and Sekharipuram during Tipu Sultan’s raids. Such episodes are fragments of a deeper continuity. Like the steps of the Kalpathy temple or the ghats of Govindarajapuram, this village pond too calls for quiet contemplation. I urge you—walk the lanes, sit by the waters, and receive darshan of Lakshminarayana Swamy. Sekharipuram still breathes that sacred rhythm.
Radhe Krishna!
