Agraharam 82 in the 100 Agraharams Project
Kalapetty
I read that Brahmin settlements in Palakkad were in Agraharams and OthaMadoms. Sri P R Ramachander in his blog calls OthaMadoms as Agraharams.
But they differed fundamentally in its architecture and layout. While the Agraharam homes were Row houses the OthaMadoms were compounded houses. Rather independent homes in a cluster - all Brahmins.
The Kalapetty agraharam or should I say OthaMadoms are about 15 kilometers south and west of Palakkad railway station and near Kuzhalmannam. The temple and the place is situated far removed from thoroughfare.
The Mookambika Temple in Kalapetty, Kuzhalmannam, is a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Mookambika, symbolizing the primordial female force. I do not see any records in history of the place being an agraharam but yet when we see and hear from the locals of Brahmins who were here once upon a time until it fell out of favour and most except one have moved out. Currently, the temple management is under the Mannadiar community, known for their stewardship and local influence in Palakkad.
About the Mannadiars:
Mannadiars are a prominent land-owning Nair sub-caste in Palakkad, traditionally engaged in agriculture and trade. Originating from Kongu Vellalars, they settled in Kerala during the Chera period. Mannadiars are respected landlords, known for their joint family systems, temple patronage, and cultural contributions in the region.
Radhe Krishna!
